Pump Hair Care - Curly Girl Method

Updated: May 1, 2020

So I'm in loooooove with Pump Hair Care 'Curly Girl' products!

I saw these products pop up on Facebook ads for a long time before I really looked into them. I honestly thought it was just another fad of hair care, but boy was I missing out all that time I wasn't looking into this product!

When I read the story behind Pump Hair Care and why Natasha Jay created the brand, I was moved by her story and her motivation to create a product centered on healing and growth. Natasha was diagnosed with Endometriosis, after a long and painful journey of not knowing and this really resonated with me as I have been through this same journey with chronic disease. Natasha discovered hair loss to be one of the many side effects of her disease, and like so many with chronic health conditions/diseases, hair loss happens for a lot of us. As a hair care professional, she wanted to design an Australian made, plant and botanical based, organic hair care range that actually worked without the hidden nasty ingredients, that suited a wide variety of hair related stresses. In my opinion, Natasha has definitely achieved this!

As a girl with fly away, mid length waves, I was very much intrigued by all the good reviews on Instagram concerning the line of 'Curly Girl' products and was very interested to see what this product could do for my hair.

My first order with Pump Hair Care was the Pump Curly Girl 2in1 Define and Repair Cream and the Curly Girl Conditioner. They arrived in a gorgeous pink box, presented nicely inside with tissue paper, a tip card on how to use the product from the creator Natasha, two sample packets of product from the Thickening range and a personalised 'packed by' card which I found to be a nice personal touch.

Pump Curly Girl 2in1 Define and Repair Cream

The 2in1 cream comes in a 200ml bottle with a pump nozzle and is super easy to use. It is recommended to apply 2-3 pumps of the product on to your hands, rub them together and then run your hands through your hair while scrunching and/or twisting your curls into shape. This product helps define your curls as well as hydrating your hair by acting as a leave in treatment. The aim of the define and repair cream is to calm the frizz and keep your curls on point all day. The formula is free from Silicone, sulphates and parabens.

I did use the 2in1 product for a few weeks but I found that it was a little too heavy for my waves and they lost a bit of their lustre towards the ends after a day of wear. I did love the scrunch ability of this product though and it definitely has the hold and smoothing action that a lot of people are looking for. I passed the product to my mum who has more frizzy, springy, cork screw curls and she used the bottle to completion with many fantastic things to say, and she would definitely purchase it again.

Ingredients wise the Pump Curly Girl 2in1 Define and Repair Cream does not contain any gluten/wheat and is, as far as my experience goes, a coeliac friendly product.

Pump Curly Girl Conditioner

This conditioner is the only conditioner I will ever 100% feel comfortable using in my hair! It comes in a 250ml pump bottle and the formula is free from silicones, alcohols, parabens and sulphates and is specially designed to enhance, define and nourish your curls.

What I love most is, you apply from mid lengths to ends, just like any other conditioner, and leave on for a minimum of 5 minutes but you only need a small amount to cover the hair because the formula is so concentrated. Honestly, this product is amazing and lasts for a long time and boy does your hair feel gorgeous afterwards!

This conditioner is also designed for co washing (conditioner washing) - and after learning the correct co washing technique from the curly girl method group - this is the best formula I've used to co wash with. It doesn't leave your scalp feeling itchy or clogged with product and your hair doesn't get that weighed down conditioner feeling at the roots. I can go a good 10 days between cleansing (or shampooing) when using the curly girl conditioner to co wash.

If my hair ever stops liking this formula I will be devastated - honestly. The products smell amazing and I love the hint of cherry kernel oil in there. The whole experience feels luxurious - from the packaging to the dry hair end result.

I did email the company to ask about whether they would consider adding larger bottles to their range, in an attempt to cut down the amount of plastic being used, and the reply from the company made me comfortable to continue using this product despite the sizing:

"We source our bottles from Australia's only 100% carbon neutral recycled plastics factory and they don't make the larger size. We also very consciously make the product quite concentrated so that a little goes a long way. This means less shipping weight and less shipping weight means a lower carbon footprint."

My hair is visibly more wavy and defined, it is easier to maintain and less frizzy, and it is also so much softer without all the excess drying agents like regular brands.

I have placed two more orders of the conditioner since my initial order and I will continue using this product for as long as my hair continues to work with this formula.

An added bonus is, I have even noticed new hair growth since using this product, it seems to be improving my hair and scalp health considerably, which is a welcome sight after the many years of chronic disease and medication damage.
