I don't know about you but I love the idea of personalised products! I have always struggled finding the balance for my hair - my scalp is either itchy and dry or extremely oily - either way my hair pays the price. I jumped on the Function Of Beauty bandwagon to try out their 'Hair Quiz' and identify what my hair and scalp needed and this is what I found.

The first thing I'd like to state, before I go on, is that I ordered the smaller bottles (8oz/236.5ml) on a one-time ship, the bottles pictured are not the full sized 16oz/473ml. However, you can customise your order so that it will be recurring (or not) and you are able to customise before each shipment to change the size, colour, scent, product type.

Beginning the Hair Quiz you complete a 'Hair Profile' where you select your personal hair profile, hair structure and scalp moisture.

The second step is selecting your personal hair goals - you can choose one to five options that you would like to work on. In this step, you always have the option of selecting a silicone-free formula for your shampoo and conditioner.

The third step is customising and personalising your product. Here you can select from six fragrance options (this includes a fragrance free option) and how strong you would like the scent between light, medium and strong. There are also eight colours to choose from (including dye free) and you can match your shampoo and conditioner in colour or customise each one separately. It's completely up to you! You can also print your name or nickname on the bottle which gives it that extra personal touch!

The fourth and final step is where you choose the size of your product, where you want any other custom treatments such as hair masks or serums, how often you would like to have the product shipped to you (monthly + free shipping, every three months + free shipping, every six months + free shipping, or a once off shipment + shipping costs). Here you can also add a travel sized container set as well if you desire.

My personal choices for my first order was unscented and colour free to ensure my scalp didn't react as I'm one of those people who manages to react to everything! My honest findings of using the product was mostly good so I will start there.

The product lasted a long time even with the smaller bottle. I found I didn't need more than one pump of product (as suggested) and I was happy to find that it wasn't stripping the oils from my hair but still cleansing. My hair felt soft from roots to ends and my hair dresser found less split ends at my appointments. I also found my scalp didn't itch in the time I used this formula, which was a relief as usually my scalp is the first place to react.

I will say though after a few washes, my hair did feel weighed down at the ends which in turn made me feel as though I needed to wash my hair more frequently. This was disappointing as my hair is quite wavy and I felt it began to lack fullness.

I decided to chat to the team at Function of Beauty for suggestions on my hair type and we came up with a new formula to try. In the end I trialled two more new shipments with slight alterations and used each bottle to completion to see whether I could find my ideal formula. Unfortunately, I didn't find my personal formula but I believe with more experimenting and time taken I would find it and gladly use this product more full time.

All in all, I believe the product is priced well and the team are very helpful and easy to work with which is one of the more important things to me. I know this is a very well loved brand and I can definitely see the appeal in customisation as we definitely don't have a one size fits all when it comes to product and our hair! This product is definitely worth trying if you're struggling to find something that works for you and it is 100% free of nasties that could harm your hair and scalp, vegan, cruelty free, sulfate free, paraben free, sustainability focused, and made in the USA.

P.S. I also ordered the travel sized silicone containers which have replaced those nasty plastic ones in my cupboard - I love them and will always recommend these if you're looking for a new set of travel containers. I also really love the option to opt out of extra pumps after your initial order to reduce wastage as well.
