Getting my clean on with this Essenzza Fuss Free Natural Activated Charcoal Whitening toothpaste.
Activated charcoal has definitely become the thing to use nowadays and one thing I have seen many people talk about is charcoal toothpaste and its natural whitening components. As I tend to steer clear of the standard every day whitening toothpastes (knowing every toothpaste contains a percentage of whitening ingredients), I wondered if the charcoal could be a better alternative.
My every day toothpaste is a standard supermarket brand targeted at sensitive teeth as I have always had cold sensitivity from grinding my teeth in my sleep when I was younger. I did wonder whether using the charcoal without the protection of sensitive friendly ingredients would leave my teeth feeling exposed but thankfully, as I don't use the charcoal every brush, I have not found this to be an issue.
One thing to be mindful of when brushing your teeth with this toothpaste is how far spit travels when you are spitting into the sink. Due to the black colour of the charcoal you can see just how far your daily hygiene habit travels around your bathroom twice daily, so don't use this product if you don't want to know about how much cleaning your sink really needs daily!
The toothpaste itself comes in two flavours Peppermint and Spearmint - I bought the Peppermint. It is made in my home state of Western Australia and comes in a 113g plastic squeezable container. The product is palm oil free, vegan and not tested on animals. The formula is fluoride, sulphate and triclosan free with no harsh forming agents (this toothpaste does not foam up). The toothpaste is said to help remove stains on the teeth, deeply cleanse and remove toxins and detoxify the mouth while your brush, which in turn polishes and whitens your teeth in the process. The product also contain diatomaceous earth for extra cleaning power (which I had to google read more about it here). At the end of the tube, simply clean out the product packaging and returned to any Biome location for recycling with Terracycle.
The suggested use for this toothpaste is to use a generous amount when brushing your teeth, which I found to be accurate as this toothpaste doesn't foam (as stated above), so you need to share it out more widely throughout the mouth to get all of your teeth. It also states to make sure that you thoroughly rinse your mouth afterwards and I would recommend this too as the charcoal can leave some black marks if not rinsed properly.
Overall, it's a little odd not having foam while brushing with this tooth paste, but I'm starting to get used to this, combined with earthy taste. Thank goodness the peppermint taste is not overpowering like some of the standard toothpastes around but it is just enough to keep your mouth feeling fresh. I'm interested to see if this product does indeed help polish and whiten teeth over time, as my teeth are a standard white with no real dis-colouring at this point, I have not noticed a big different, but I do find that my mouth feels very clean and fresh after use.
I would definitely give this brand a try if you are looking to try out a more natural option for your oral care.
