Have A Tummy-Friendly Easter On Biome

Updated: May 5, 2020

Last year was my first year trialing Biome's gluten free, vegan-friendly chocolate for Easter time and I am so happy I did! I genuinely made some very yummy discoveries trying out all these chocolates and now have my go-to list of tasty treats to spoil myself at Easter time (and when I just need a little chocolate pick me up ).

My top three favourites (and my family), from the six different types that I tried, would definitely be the Vego Bars, Moo Free and Bonvita egg halves. I wasn't necessarily a big fan of the Loving Earth range, as I found it quite bitter, but for those who love their chocolate dark with lots of cacao, Loving Earth organic chocolate, will be right up your alley!

I feel the most versatile and family friendly of these ranges would be the Moo Free eggs as they come in multiple different flavour combinations and also have a range of bars and small rabbits aimed at children for the Easter holidays. These come in flavours like "bunnycomb", plain, mint, orange and dark and are as close to the standard creaminess of chocolate that I've tasted in a long time!

All of these ranges have their pros and cons, but all in all, I believe that Biome stocks a great range that is bound to have something for everyone to enjoy! Check out my thoughts below on each of the brands I tried out.

VEGO Whole Hazelnut Chocolate Bar 150g

If you are looking for a vegan, gluten free, dairy free sweet treat that doesn't compromise on that all important chocolate taste - then look no further than Vego! This hazelnut chocolate has become somewhat of an obsession for me and I have to hide any evidence of having a Vego chocolate bar in my house, from my family, if I don't want to share.

Each bar is a super smooth combination of hazelnut paste and crunchy whole hazelnuts. These bars are made in Italy and contain fair trade and organic ingredients while being gluten and palm oil free.

This chocolate honestly reminds me, from what I can remember, Ferrero Rocher hazelnut balls tasting like, and its such a nice relief to have a treat that tastes like a memory from my childhood (before coeliac disease diagnosis).

You can get these bars in 150g 'share' bars and mini bars at 65g.

I cannot recommend Vego chocolate enough - this chocolate will stay a firm staple chocolate brand in my repertoire for any occasion.

Vego does contain soy.

Moo Free Sea Salt & Caramel Chocolate Easter Egg 160g

Moo Free is made in Britain and is registered vegan, cruelty free, gluten free, egg free, wheat free, casein free, organic, GMO free, vegetarian.

My family and I are a huge fan of the Moo Free brand, stemming back to when we were younger and mum discovered the Mini Moos chocolates at a local health food shop. I was so excited to try out the Easter Eggs when I realised that Biome stocked them and I couldn't pass up the opportunity to try Sea Salt & Caramel!

This chocolate is honestly one of the best representations of milk chocolate - without the milk! It is creamy, melts in your mouth, and has the right amount of flavour the whole way through. Just enough salt and just enough sweet to satisfy the taste buds!

I am a huge caramel lover and the same goes for my mum, so it's easy to say that this chocolate was one of our favourites and it definitely didn't last long once everyone had a bit.

This and any of the Moo Free products are always welcome in my home at Easter (or any other time of the year for that matter). I 100% recommend this chocolate to anyone who is looking for an allergy friendly chocolate treat and it is a suitable brand for all ages.

This egg does have an allergy advice statement: May contain traces of hazelnuts.

Bonvita Organic Easter Chocolate Half Eggs 100g

My mum and I quite happily finished the bag of these little egg halves! These chocolates are gluten free, lactose free, vegan and organic and are quite tasty despite very minimal ingredients. I found them to be quite creamy despite being mostly made from cocoa butter and rice syrup powder.

While this brand does state gluten free, lactose free and vegan, this particular product does come with an allergen statement that says may contain traces of nuts, peanuts and milk as other products by this brand do have these ingredients.

I would personally consider buying these eggs again as an Easter treat in the future as the price is reasonable for the amount you get in the bag and myself and my family didn't mind the taste.

This product is currently not stocked at Biome but will be back up on the website for Easter.

Loving Earth Boobook Chocolate Eggs 100g

I have to say, despite the slight bitterness of the outer layer of chocolate, I didn't mind these little eggs from Loving Earth. I love that they come in a little box laid out on shredded paper and each box bought goes towards supporting the Great Forest National Park campaign (read more about it here).

Each one of these eggs is filled with a caramel cashew milk cream that is described as burnt toffee, butterscotch and vanilla notes. I tend to agree with this as it does resemble a sweeter caramel filling more so than other types I have tried.

Loving Earth also prides themselves on creating this cream-filled egg without the palm oil! Which is awesome! As it states that most cream filled eggs, even vegan varieties, contain palm oil.

Made from ingredients certified organic, fair trade, cane sugar free, gluten free, GMO free, dairy free, palm oil free and vegan and is a product produced and processed by ethically sourced ingredients and made locally in Melbourne, Australia.

Loving Earth Turkishly Delightful Raw Vegan Chocolate 45g

My mum and I are big Turkish Delight fans so this was a good contender for a chocolate tasting trial. This chocolate is an raw dark chocolate truffle mix with cranberries and rose essential oil to give it that Turkish Delight feel.

Made from ingredients certified organic, fair trade, cane sugar free, gluten free, GMO free, dairy free, palm oil free and vegan and is a product produced and processed by ethically sourced ingredients and made locally in Melbourne, Australia.

I personally enjoyed the cranberry bits and the over all texture of this chocolate truffle but it was still just a little bit too bitter for myself and my family to order again.

This comes in a cardboard box and as stated by Loving Earth: Cardboard packaging is made with 97% post consumer recycled fibre printed with vegetable inks (meaning new trees are not cut down to make the boxes). No heavy metals such as Lead, Cadmium, Mercury, Hexavalent Chromium, Antimony, Arsenic and Selenium are intentionally used in the manufacture of the printing inks, which would potentially be harmful to worms or seeping into water ways. The clear film the chocolate is wrapped in, looks like regular plastic, but is actually 100% plant based (from renewable resources) and is completely home compostable.

Loving Earth Mint Raw Vegan Chocolate 30g

As I stated above, Love Earth wasn't my favourite chocolate tried out of this lot, as I found it quite bitter but I have a definite sweet tooth and I know that raw cacao wasn't necessarily going to agree with my taste buds. The overall look of and feel of the chocolate was inviting and the mint essential oils were balanced nicely, without being too overpowering.

I am, however, happy I did try this brand as it is a certified organic, fair trade, cane sugar free, gluten free, GMO free, dairy free and vegan and is a product produced and processed by ethically sourced ingredients and made locally in Melbourne, Australia. Each one of these chocolates are made with certified organic raw cacao from Peru, peppermint essential oil and sweetened with organic evaporated coconut nectar. All of Loving Earth's products are packaged in compostable packaging which is perfect to lessen the waste going in recycling and landfill.

"Risk of melting: please note that because your order is sent by post we cannot guarantee that your chocolate will not melt in transit.
